What is this activity?

The Board of Elections is responsible for organizing and structuring all student government elections at Stuyvesant. Freshman Caucus elections are held each fall, while SU and the other caucus elections are held each spring. The BOE emphasizes democratic integrity and political equality in the hopes that student government elections can run smoothly without any major infractions being committed. To learn more about the BOE, please visit out website at: vote.stuysu.org

On what days does this activity meet?

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

What is the meeting schedule?

Interest meetings will be held at the beginning of each election season, roughly twice in November and twice in May. Aside from the November and May election seasons, no meetings will be held by the Board of Elections as other student government roles are decided through a separate application process.

What does a typical meeting look like?

Interest meetings will be organized for each election season to present information about the BOE handbook to potential tickets. The purpose of the Interest meetings are for potential tickets to learn more about the timeline and rules surrounding student elections. It is a space for people to ask questions and understand the commitment it takes to form a proper campaign. The handbook and timeline are later sent out to all tickets who are interested in continuing their election journey. Debates will be held in the library for each caucus and SU election as well. These debates are live streamed on Facebook and uploaded to the respective Dear Incoming Class of [graduating class] Facebook groups. These debates will provide the student body with information on the various tickets through questions asked specifically to each ticket and the space for ticket-to-ticket debating. Audiences are encouraged to attend if they wish to ask questions as well.

How does this activity appoint leaders?

The BOE is run by two Chairs. Each Chair serves a two-year role to organize debates and interest meetings, respond to messages and questions from tickets, and ensure that all campaign seasons run smoothly. Debate Moderators are appointed for one year and are in charge of forming ticket-specific questions for debates and timing all responses.

What makes this activity unique?

The Board of Elections is unique to Stuyvesant as it is the ONLY governing body which helps ensure the fairness of student government elections. This organization is very involved in the political scheme of the school and has dealt with a variety of issues regarding student elections throughout its many years of existence. Through the Board of Elections, students are able to learn more about social policy and how to maintain equal opportunity. This organization is also unique because it isn't one that many other schools have. Through this regulatory body, we are able to ensure that elections run smoothly and discuss any infractions or unfair advantages that any ticket can commit or obtain during the election season. The Board of Elections also manages any contention about winners of the election and uses a website to have a run-off voting system for each election. The Board of Elections assists in student government elections and ensures fairness for all.
