NYC Empower-ED
NYC Empower-ED is a student-led initiative dedicated to supporting underserved middle school students and their families by making the NYC high school admissions process more accessible, understandable, and less stressful. The admissions journey can feel overwhelming, with its multiple pathways, competitive exams, and complicated systems. Unfortunately, many families cannot afford costly test prep programs or private admissions counselors. Empower-ED exists to bridge that gap by offering free tutoring for SHSAT and other tests, essay/interview workshops, portfolio guidance for specialized art schools, and personalized support with school ranking strategies, lottery numbers, waitlist navigation, and other application steps. Beyond these services, we also fundraise to provide free study materials so that financial barriers never limit a student’s opportunities. *Empower-ED members have the chance to make a meaningful impact by mentoring middle school students, tutoring in test prep subjects, and taking on leadership roles within the organization. Volunteering not only helps younger students succeed but also fosters lasting connections among members themselves.
Meeting Schedule
Empower-ED will hold regular meetings throughout the school year to stay organized and aligned with our mission. Leadership meetings will be held monthly and led by the presidents. Department meetings for Tutoring Development, Operations, and Outreach will be held as needed by each department’s leaders. For Tutor Development, tutor check-in meetings with their respective leaders will be held every month. Tutors will host sessions based on their and their tutee’s availability. Meetings will be paused for exam/SING seasons. Our casual members can attend monthly volunteer opportunities to help underserved middle schoolers.
